EVENT SPEAKERS

Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP

Archbishop Anthony Fisher OP, a Sydney local, entered the Dominican Order in 1985 and was ordained a priest in 1991. Subsequently, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of Sydney in 2003, bishop of Parramatta in 2010, and then archbishop of Sydney in 2014. At his installation, the Archbishop shared his vision for the Church in Sydney:

“My hope is for a Church in which the Gospel is preached with joy, the wisdom of our tradition mined with fidelity, the sacraments celebrated with dignity and welcome, and the seminaries, convents and youth groups teeming with new life; a Church in which our parishes, chaplaincies and educational institutions are true centres of the new evangelisation, our laity theologically literate and spiritually well-formed, our outreach to the needy effective and growing, and God glorified above all.”

Among the many pastoral initiatives Archbishop Fisher has introduced, he launched the “Go Make Disciples” mission plan in December 2020 to promote this joyful proclamation of the Gospel as the path of renewal for our parishes and pastoral ministries.

Archbishop Julian Porteous DD

Archbishop Julian Porteous DD was born in Sydney and ordained a priest for this Archdiocese in 1974. Having served in numerous parishes and as Rector of the Seminary of the Good Shepherd, he was then ordained an auxiliary bishop for Sydney in 2003. Archbishop Julian has been an advocate of the New Evangelisation called for by Pope St John Paul II. He was responsible for evangelisation and renewal in the Archdiocese of Sydney until his appointment as Archbishop of Hobart in 2013. His episcopal ministry in Tasmania has focused on the renewal of parishes, the encouragement of religious life, the development of youth ministry, marriage and evangelisation among numerous other initiatives.
